Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, says the merger might happen in August, but there is a 'risk of delay.'

Following Ethereum engineer Preston Van Loon's remarks at the Permissionless conference, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has stated that The Merge will most likely take place in August. Buterin cautioned that there's still a chance of a postponement, with The Merge taking place in September or October 2022.

Buterin predicts that the merger will take place in August -

  • Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum's co-founder, recently spoke at the ETH Shanghai Web 3.0 Developer Summit, where he described the much-anticipated proof-of-stake (PoS) shift. The Merge is set to become live on Ethereum's testnet Ropsten on June 8, 2022, in 18 days.
  • Buterin stated at the ETH Shanghai Summit that the transition will be a key test for the Ethereum ecosystem as a whole. "This will be a significant test, larger than any of our previous tests," Buterin emphasised. "Moving from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake on a big existing test network with various applications."

The Merge, The Surge, The Verge, The Purge, and The Splurge are all on the Ethereum roadmap.

  • In addition, Buterin indicated that The Merge might be implemented by August, confirming what ETH software developer Preston Van Loon suggested during the Permissionless conference. Buterin did specify the month of August, but he also hinted at delays.
  • "If there are no issues, the integration will take place in August," said the Ethereum co-founder. "However, there is always the possibility of difficulties." There's also the possibility of delays. As a result, September and October are both possibilities," Buterin noted.
  • Meanwhile, following the London update, which established ETH's burn mechanism, The Merge is the first of Ethereum's big improvements. Ethereum will deploy The Surge, The Verge, The Purge, and lastly The Splurge after The Merge.
  • The Surge uses sharding approaches to help increase scaling by employing zero-knowledge rollups (ZK-rollups). The Verge transition on Ethereum will use Verkle trees to achieve statelessness through the Merkle proof update.

In a blog post regarding Verkle trees, Vitalik Buterin wrote, "The structure of nodes in a hexary (16 children per parent) Verkle tree, here populated with six (key, value) pairs."

  • The Purge will include an EVM simplification track as well as the removal of old data and technical debt, according to the Ethereum roadmap. Finally, "Miscellaneous yet necessary extras" are the focus of The Splurge.
  • Buterin also mentioned The Surge, stating that Ethereum will be "a terrific system" with these two enhancements (Merge and Surge).
